District Update - July 8, 2020

July 8, 2020

Dear Students, Families, and Staff:

As summer progresses and COVID-19 remains a concern, we want to provide an update on the coming school year.   With the state recommendations announced last week, the plans for opening school are being engaged and accelerated.  With health and safety as a priority, South Lake Schools will be actively educating students this fall.

In the 2020-21 school year, every South Lake student will receive an Apple iPad so that they can utilize the district’s online learning platform.  In addition, students and parents will have a technology orientation and ongoing support as they engage with this learning platform.  We want South Lake students to demonstrate and pursue excellence both in academic content and technological literacy.

Moreover, if there is a resurgence of COVID-19 cases in October, Apple iPads will ease the shift back to full online instruction if it is necessary. While this pandemic has radically changed day-to-day life, it has not altered our commitment to provide students with a “real education for the real world.”

All instructional programs will take place in accordance with state and federal health guidelines, with physical distancing and PPE for students and staff. The district is actively creating multiple plans to ensure that if there is a recurrence of the virus, there is a seamless transition back to virtual instruction.  In addition, any students and staff who are immunocompromised or more vulnerable to COVID-19 will always have the opportunity to engage remotely.

In the case that classes must be taught online, every South Lake student will have access to a wide range of social, academic, technical, and mental health services.   Because additional assistance may be needed during this difficult time, the South Lake teachers and staff are committed to providing ongoing assistance to our students and families.

In addition to planning for new educational models, options for support services—including both food distribution and transportation to and from school—are currently in development.  As always, please do not hesitate to contact your building administrator or the central office if you have questions or concerns.

The start of the year is an exciting time for students, families, teachers, and staff members.  In the 2020-21 school year, South Lake students will discover new academic worlds and experience new learning adventures.  While the way we engage “school” may be different, what will not change is that every child will be challenged to learn and grow academically, athletically, and in the arts.

We look forward to partnering with you and our community to provide an outstanding educational experience in the coming year. Thank you for your ongoing support!
