Millage Renewal Proposals
On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, South Lake Schools is asking voters to consider renewing the current non-homestead operating and hold harmless millages. Taxes will NOT increase for residents with the passage of these proposals.
The non-homestead operating millage will NOT have an effect on a homeowner’s primary residence. Michigan requires school districts to levy 18 mills on non-homestead properties in order to receive their full foundation allowance. The foundation allowance is a significant source of funding for schools.
A hold harmless millage was created in 1994 through the passing of Proposal A. With this millage, districts residing in communities that are spending more than the minimum per pupil funding, can continue to do so. Renewing the hold harmless millage would assist South Lake School’s ability to provide a robust academic environment.
South Lake Schools uses funding provided through operating and hold harmless millages to ensure the district can continue to offer an education of excellence to our students and continue our legacy of learning, first established over 125 years ago.
South Lake is dedicated to being good stewards of all tax dollars and we remain grateful for the close partnership we have with our community. For over 125 years, South Lake Schools has been a part of the St. Clair Shores and Eastpointe communities. The district is fortunate to have the support of Cavalier families, friends, neighbors and businesses throughout the area.
If approved, the non-homestead operating and hold harmless millages will provide $5.3 million to the district annually, providing much-needed educational resources to ensure our students grow and thrive. These funds are a vital part of the district budget and without this support, substantial reductions in programming would be necessary.
In partnership with this community, our students are encouraged to reach their ultimate potential. With the dollars provided through operating and hold harmless millage funds, we ensure that South Lake facilities are available and safe for our students and community.
